she was almost afraid.

"I really forgot about them," she said.
"Only the priests had 'em."
She touches them carefully.

"What are you afraid of?"

"What if I've forgotten how to read?"

"Not possible." She hears the smile in
his voice, even though
there's not one on his face.

"I'll take good care of them."

He sighs. "No. Write on 'em,
spill taco sauce on 'em.
I'll get you more."

"Really?" Fred settles down between
Angel's feet and opens
the first book.

Before she becomes absorbed, she feels his hand on her hair.
