He kneels beside the couch and rests his hand on her cheek, his thumb stroking across her lips.

"I'm sorry. I had to." Her voice is husky with a mixture of sleep and emotion.

"I know." He glances at the proofs lying on the coffee table. "So?"

She covers his hand with hers. "Gail thinks her dad is a wonderful writer and she loves him very much."

"What about her mom?"

"She'd better love me if she wants her bowl cleaned again."

"CJ--"

Her arms around his neck and her demanding mouth are the best reviews of his life.
