Didn't Know
by Faith Unbreakable

Didn't you know that this was the price? Didn't you know that the price for taking a life is to carry a ghost with you for the rest of you own life? With every bolt of green light you take every failure, every victory, every dream and every hope inside of you. By taking a life you make it yours.

Yours to enjoy and yours to suffer. All those Death Eaters you killed, they had dreams too, and some even loved and now it's all yours. To kill is to take responsibility for a soul, Harry, didn't you know that?

Didn't you know that the Death Eater' souls are yours now, as is Dumbledore's? Molly's? Dean's, Collin's, Millie's, Pansy's, the twins', my father's? They are all yours. You killed them and they killed for you and everyone who falls in this war, everyone who fell, is a part of you now. You're their reason, didn't you know? You drive them, kill them, save them, make them bleed and you own them. Every drop of blood that is spilled, belongs to you and the Dark Lord only.

The rest are just pawns.

They're all part of the weasel's beloved chess game and you move them across the field. You and the Dark Lord. You weep when the white knight falls and you cheer when the black pawns fall one by one. And you keep all the broken pieces and all the rubble, because it's your job.

They are yours Harry.

And when they die you carry their ghosts, because it's all you can do and it's the way it goes. The way it went and always will go. This is your war, who else should have our souls?

Oh, Harry, stupid Gryffindor, you never learn, do you? You didn't know. Of course you didn't know.

You never do.

It's your job to function, to kill and to fight, not to think. But Granger's gone now and so are most of the adults. You have to learn now, you have to know. I'm not as smart as I'd like to be. Never had the time to get our NEWTs, had we?

No, you have to know now.

Yours. This is all yours. They are all yours. In life they fight for you, or against you and in death they haunt you, live their lives through you.

One can't live while the other survives.

All of them survive as long as you live. Inside of you. It's the price we all pay for killing and you're the place where all the strings run together. In the end it's all just a matter of who holds more strings. You or him?

You really didn't know.

You didn't know that this is the price you pay.

Didn't know that the ghosts are yours now.

Didn't know that your soul would suffer as much as your body in this war.

You didn't know that it never was about the Wizarding World. It was always just about the two of you. And you didn't know that there won't be anything after you, because there's nothing and no one left now.

You didn't even know that I, Draco Malfoy, would be one of your ghosts, too, before the end, did you?

Of course you didn't.

We never told you all this, because we needed you strong. But it's all cinders and ash now, so I guess it doesn't matter anymore, after all.

Doesn't matter that you never knew I loved you.

Doesn't matter at all.
